Obituary

Sidney Jeff Stewart, 87, of Commerce passed away at his home early Sunday morning August 2, 2026. Sidney was born in Commerce, Tx. on May 14, 1939; the son of William Henry Stewart and Mary Dees Stewart. He married Nancy Browning Stewart on December 9, 1961; she survives him. He attended the Church of Christ in Commerce, Texas.

Sidney was the youngest of 10 children; and he worked from a very early age. As a young boy he cleaned the offices of Dr. King and worked at the soda counter of the drug store. As a teenager he and his brother Jack stocked produce at the local A&P grocery store. As an adult he managed Babcock’s Auto Supply stores in Casa Linda shopping center in Dallas, Commerce, Cleburne, and Terrell. While he and Nancy raised their children he purchased and operated the local hardware store, Stewart Hardware. In the early 1980’s he went to work for E-Systems - Raytheon as a material parts handler until his retirement. For his entire life he bought, sold and raised quarter horses. He dreamed of owning a top-class cutting horse. He enjoyed time at the barn with his dogs, especially Annie and taking care of many colts that he raised. Sid and Nancy would escape Commerce on weekends with friends to Oaklawn Park and Louisiana Downs to watch horses run. He was known to play a Pick 6 every now and then.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include 3 daughters: Jennifer Perry, Commerce, Texas, Twilah Mann, husband Patrick, The Woodlands, Texas, Sydney Miller, husband Wayne, Seguin, Texas. 6 grandchildren: Korey Reeves, husband Kendall, Greenville, Texas, Haley Perry, Commerce, Texas, Kyle Mann, The Woodlands, Texas, Colton Miller, Canyon Lake, Texas, Katelynn Miller, Wimberley, Texas, Trey Miller, Seguin, Texas and 2 great grandchildren: Kole Reeves, and Kennedy Reeves, Greenville, Texas. Other survivors include many extended relatives, nieces and nephews from the Brumley, Clark, Watson, Tucker, Newell, Bell, Adams, St. James, and Stewart families, as well as great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 8 sisters: Alveda Brumley, Leon Clark, Loveta Watson, Ruth Tucker, Helen Newell, Willie Jo Bell, Anita Adams, Barbara St. James, and one brother: Jack Stewart.

Funeral services for Sidney Stewart will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026 in the Funeral Chapel at Jones-Walker Funeral Home with visitation from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. and the funeral service to follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce with Kyle Mann, Patrick Mann, Colton Miller, Trey Miller, Wayne Miller, Kendall Reeves, and Benton Burrow serving as pallbearers. Chaplain Paul Dinkel and David Gibson will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers the family invites those who wish to honor Sidney's memory to consider making a memorial gift to support the Lion Rodeo Team at East Texas A&M University. Contributions made in his honor will help provide opportunities for the Lion Rodeo Team and continue the legacy of the program. The family encourages those who attend the service to dress casually (boots and jeans preferred).
